Property Taxes: South Carolina has many philosophies that just make good sense. The first is their school funding. South Carolina recently decided that it is not fair that only hard working home owners paid property taxes for the entire school burden. South Carolina decided that a percentage of the lottery proceeds should help fund the schools. Then they add a small percentage onto the state sales tax for the remainder of the funding. This means that every dollar spent in SC helps the schools. This allows SC property taxes to be almost 1/2 of Charlotte NC property taxes. In addition SC made another decision. Seniors worked too hard to earn their homes and deserve a discount. They receive a discount on their homes appraised value to help keep their money in their pockets. Lastly is the contrast between a resident and the investor. The investor still pays the higher tax bracket for SC homes. This ultimately will minimize investors (market distortion) and result in more resident home buyers. Bravo SC!
